Watch Out for the Latest FaceTime Scam

Scammers are constantly coming up with new ways to trick people, and one of the latest involves FaceTime calls. While the technology may be different, the goal is the same: getting access to your personal information and your money.

At CPM Federal Credit Union, we’re always working to help protect our members from fraud. Staying informed is one of the best ways to keep your accounts safe.

How the Scam Works

The scam usually starts with an unexpected phone call, text message, or FaceTime request from someone claiming to be from your bank, Apple, or another trusted company.

They may tell you there’s suspicious activity on your account, a problem with your device, or that you’re owed a refund. Their goal is to create a sense of urgency so you’ll act before you have time to think.

During the call, they may ask you to:

  • Share your online banking username or password.
  • Provide a one-time security code sent by text or email.
  • Verify your debit or credit card information.
  • Share your Apple ID credentials.
  • Download software that gives them remote access to your device.

Remember, these requests are red flags.

What CPM Will Never Ask You To Do

CPM will never contact you unexpectedly and ask you to:

  • Share your online banking password.
  • Provide a one-time verification code.
  • Give us your Apple ID password.
  • Download remote access software.
  • Move your money to another account to “keep it safe.”

If anyone asks you to do these things, it’s a scam.

How to Protect Yourself

A few simple habits can help keep you safe:

  • Be cautious of unexpected calls, texts, emails, or FaceTime requests.
  • Never share passwords, security codes, or account information with someone who contacts you first.
  • Keep your iPhone, iPad, and other devices updated with the latest security updates.
  • If someone pressures you to act immediately, pause. Scammers often rely on creating panic.

When in Doubt, Reach Out

If you receive a suspicious call or FaceTime request claiming to be from CPM, disconnect the call immediately.

Even if your caller ID displays CPM’s 800-255-1513 phone number, don’t assume the call is legitimate. Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making it appear they’re calling from a trusted organization when they’re not.

Instead, hang up and place a new call to CPM yourself by dialing 800-255-1513. Initiating the call ensures you’re speaking directly with a CPM team member who can verify whether there’s actually an issue with your account.

At CPM, protecting our members is one of our highest priorities. By staying alert, knowing the warning signs, and contacting us directly whenever something doesn’t feel right, you can help keep your accounts—and your peace of mind—safe.
